Recent Cases

Our recent high profile successes include:

Quaden and Yarraka Bayles

In 2020 Centennial Lawyers were proud to act for Quaden Bayles and his mother, Yarraka in a defamation case in the Federal Court against Nationwide News (Newscorp) and Miranda Devine after Ms Devine published a number of tweets about the Bayles family. A settlement was reached in this case and Ms Devine issued an apology to the Bayles family.

Many thanks to Duncan, George and the terrific team at Centennial Lawyers who were an absolute pleasure to work with and far exceeded expectation as they went above and beyond to ensure a successful outcome.” Yarraka Bayles

Nova Peris

Centennial Lawyers achieved an impressive result for ex-Senator and Olympic Gold medallist Nova Peris in a well-publicised defamation case brought in the Supreme Court of Victoria after a segment broadcast on Channel Ten’s morning program.

George and Duncan seem to have an innate understanding of Aboriginal people and this is evident particularly with George and the social justice projects he involves himself in. They both are great allies of Aboriginal people. I have no hesitation recommending George and Duncan from Centennial Lawyers. Nova Peris OAM OLY

NSW Ambulance Mass Data Breach

The sensitive personal and health information of NSW Ambulance workers was compromised when the NSW Ambulance Service allowed a contractor widespread access to its records and databases. The NSW Ambulance contractor was able to gather and sell the personal and health information of NSW Ambulance employees.

The class action was one of the few of its kind in Australia that dealt with a massive data breach by a government agency. The lead plaintiff, represented by Centennial Lawyers, reached a favourable settlement agreement with NSW Ambulance to conclude the proceedings, which was approved by Chief Justice Ward of the Equity Division in the NSW Supreme Court. The NSW ambulance employees who were class members received correspondence about receiving compensation and we were proud to have achieved this result. You can read more about the settlement here.

This is a fantastic result for 108 NSW ambulance workers who have had their workers’ compensation files unlawfully accessed and extracts of it sold to at least one law firm. Centennial Lawyers Principal Solicitor George Newhouse

Alice Voigt

Centennial Lawyers acted for Alice Voigt in a defamation case that received a lot of media attention in 2019-20. Ms Voigt was sued in the NSW District Court after posting a comment on a Rose Bay Community Facebook page. This was a very difficult case but we achieved a very strong result.

Successful settlement with Paramount and Network 10

Our client, a proud First Nations man, was recently accused of committing a violent crime by Network 10 in one of its major news broadcasts. We negotiated a favourable settlement for our client which included a compensation payment, an on-air apology and written apology as seen below.
